This might be the best bullet available for use in the Dan Wesson .357 “Supermag.” I’m still in the process of developing handloads for the bullet in my Dan Wesson M40 V8S, a circa 1987 Monson, Mass. revolver that I just love. From my DW’s 8 inch barrel I get a solid 1525 f.p.s. charging with H4227 with the Hornady 180 grain XTP seated out to fully maximize the long-cylindered DW “Supermag” by using the lower crimping groove Hornady has so kindly provided. Accuracy is good, running about 1 to 1.5 inch at 25 yards from the bench. Pentration and expansion in wet newsprint test lead me to think that such a load holds much promise for medium game hunting (.357 180gr. XTP @ 1500+). Expansion runs in the neighborhood of .60″. With the bullets high-for-caliber sectional density, I would be confident putting it through the shoulders of whitetail, mule deer, wild hog, antelope, etc.— and it should expand readily on a lung shot with no rib hit, as XTPs are generally very reliable in opening consistently in my experience. They’re great hunting bullets… period, the Hornady XTP. I’ll place an addenda herein after working some with RL7. I think there is something interesting awaiting the combination of those components (180 gr. XTP/ Alliant RL7/ RP 7 1/2 primers/ RP cases). We’ll see, but I think it’ll make the Mad Max everything it was billed to be from the beginning.
High quality and easy to load. Have used the xtp bullets often in different calibers and weights.
Good design and weighr
great round no misfires consistently accurate
I was going to load them for self defense loads. Changed my mind and loaded them for hunting. They seem to shoot very well out of my Ruger GP 100 6 in barrel. The quality of these bullets is top notch. They really pack a punch in the hotter loads and still mushroom well when I load the with a 38 +P load. Will definitely continue to purchase more. Shipping was fast and price was great. Thank you Larry Potterfield for a truly great buying experience.
Perfect for reloading, nice consistent quality for trouble free processing.
Hornady makes terrific bullets and this one is no exception. Very accurate out of my S&W M686
Best view i have ever seen !
